After her immensely successful portrayal in Barbie, Margot Robbie has announced her decision to temporarily step away from acting. The Australian actress played the lead role in what is considered one of the most significant films of 2023, both critically and financially. Barbie, directed by a woman, achieved a groundbreaking debut, raking in an impressive $1.45 billion globally by January 10, 2024.
Despite reaching new heights in her career, Margot Robbie is contemplating a hiatus from acting, as she candidly shared in an interview featured in Deadline's Awards Line issue. Opening up about her plans, she expressed a desire to take a break, acknowledging the possibility that audiences might be feeling saturated with her presence after the success of her Barbie role.
In her conversation with the publication, Margot remarked, "I also think everyone's probably sick of the sight of me for now. I should probably disappear from screens for a while." She continued, stating, "'Honestly, if I did another movie too soon, people would say, 'Her again? We just did a whole summer with her. We're over it.'"
Looking ahead, Margot added, "I don't know what I'll do next, but I hope it's a little while away." While taking a break from acting, Margot Robbie isn't completely stepping away from the film industry. The Australian actress has been actively involved behind the scenes in production work, with a future goal of venturing into directing.
Expressing her aspirations, Margot stated, "I really do want to direct. I've felt like I wanted to direct for about the last seven years. But I've always seen it as a privilege, not a right."
As Margot temporarily withdraws from the screen, it also means a hiatus from the foot fetish memes that gained prominence after her appearance in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019. In a conversation with CinemaBlend last year, Margot Robbie shared the story of how she unexpectedly encountered the internet's foot fetish community. She recounted that during her early days in Hollywood, she decided to Google herself for the first time.
“The very first time I Googled myself, you know how when you type something into Google and it predicts what the rest of it is going to be?" she explained.
“I’d started working and I was on some things and I hadn’t Googled myself before, and so I wrote in ‘Margot Robbie’ and before I finished writing ‘Robbie', ‘Margot Robbie feet’ came up.”
She went on to reveal, “I clicked on it and realized that there were pictures zoomed in on my feet, and people were writing about them. Someone had even compiled a video featuring footage of my feet, and I was like, ‘oh wow, this is like a thing. I didn’t realize.'"
