Former McDonald’s chef explains why the menu rarely changes

Former corporate McDonald's chef Mike Haracz is answering yet more questions about the famed fast food chain.

Mike is forever answering inquisitive customers' questions and has previously addressed topics such as why McDonald's restaurants don't have knives in their kitchens and why its ketchup tastes different to Heinz.

I'm sure most people would agree that McDonald's is good at its classics, from Chicken McNuggets and Big Macs, to cheeseburgers and McFlurrys, but some have questioned why the chain doesn't introduce newer items to its menus as well.
You might think it's because the food chain has a bit of a 'don't fix what's not broken' mentality - but it's actually more complicated than that.

Responding to one person's question on the topic on TikTok, Mike explained: "If you look at every other country including Canada, Mexico, and every other place where there's a McDonald's, usually they have more creative menus.

"A big reason for that if that they don't have the supply chain issues that McDonald's US does in the case of volume."
He continued: "McDonald's in the US is 85% of all of McDonald’s revenue business is in the United States.

"If McDonald’s launched something new, they are changing the market value of that ingredient if it’s not something already in the system."

Mike proceeded to give an example of the fast food chain previously having wanted to introduce a blueberry-based product, but it had to boycott its plans because apparently it would have 'used up the world's resources of blueberries'.

Holy moly.

Someone replied to Mike's videos suggesting that McDonald's does regional specialties - but it has done this before.

In previous years, at what has been hailed as one of McDonald's 'poshest restaurants' in Maine, a lobster roll has been available on its menus.

It was only available in 600 of its 13,438 restaurants, and was described as as 'freshly prepared and made with 100 percent North Atlantic lobster meat lightly tossed with mayonnaise in a stainless steel bowl, layered on crisp leaf and shredded lettuce and served chilled on a home-style toasted roll'.

It isn't thought to have been on the menu since 2017, however.

Elsewhere, other TikTokers thanked Mike for his explanation as its a question that has obviously been on a lot of people's minds.

"That is really interesting!" wrote one person, as another said: "This makes a lot of sense. Thank you for explaining!"
