First trailer for Wonka movie starring Timothée Chalamet has dropped

The first trailer for the new Wonka movie starring Timothée Chalamet as the titular confectioner has dropped, and we could not be more excited for a return to the beloved Roald Dahl story.
Wonka serves as an origin story to the fictional character, who has previously been famously played by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp after first being introduced in Dahl’s 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

And this time round, we’ve got Chalamet in the top hat, joined by an all-star supporting cast including the likes of Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Matt Lucas, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman and Jim Carter.

An official synopsis says: “An origin story that explores the vivid, mythical beginnings of the imaginative young inventor before he becomes the renowned scrumdiddlyumptious Mozart of chocolate.”

While the film isn’t due for release until December this year, we now finally have a brand new, whimsical trailer to sink our teeth into - which was teased by Chalamet yesterday (10 July).
He shared a graphic of the movie’s title on his Instagram Story, followed by the message: “Trailer tomorrow.”

After the trailer debuted at CinemaCon earlier this year, we were primed to expect our first glimpse of Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa - a moment that the Hollywood Reporter said ‘got big laughs from the crowd’.

Key told The Hollywood Reporter promised the film would be ‘wondrous’ and ‘epic’, adding: “It’s a nice, big, full, beautiful piece of art, and Paul King, who directed it, is a delightful human being who has this wonderful, childlike heart. He was the perfect person to direct the project.”
Yep, that’s Paul King of Paddington fame, so we know we’re in safe hands.

Speaking about Chalamet’s turn as Wonka, Key continued: “There’s this wonderful effortlessness about how he plays Wonka, not to mention the fact that there’s this hopeful quality that he gives the character, a kind of indomitable quality that he’ll never quit, he’s always up for the next thing.

“He’s like, ‘OK, that didn’t work out? We’ll do this and we’ll try something else.”
He added: “Sacré bleu! This kid, you know, he drips charisma and a wonderful confidence. He’s just a really delicious artist.”

Chalamet also revealed he has no fewer than seven musical numbers in the new film, having told Vogue that they were 'so sincere' and 'so joyous'.

The trailer, which dropped today (11 July), reveals that viewers will 'discover how Willy became Wonka'.

Wonka is due to land in cinemas on 15 December.
