The wildly popular South Korean drama made history last September when it became the streaming giant's most-watched series.

Following a group of debt-riddled characters, the show tells the story of how they're recruited to play high-stakes schoolyard games for life-changing sums of money.

As well as exploring social division in South Korean society, the show inspired countless memes and a good few Halloween costumes.

Now, Netflix has put rumors to rest and officially confirmed that it will be back for a second season.

"Red light… GREENLIGHT!" the streaming giant tweeted yesterday, in reference to one of the show's most iconic games.

"Squid Game is officially coming back for Season 2," the tweet added.

Netflix also shared a statement from writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk, in which he reflected on the show and teased a few details from the upcoming season.

"It took 12 years to bring the first season of 'Squid Game' to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever," Hwang wrote.

"As the writer, director, and producer of 'Squid Game', a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show," he added.

Hwang then revealed that protagonist Gi-hun and the mysterious game boss 'The Front Man' will both be back, writing: "And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming."

He also teased the potential return of the shadowy games recruiter, saying: "The man in the suit with ddakji might be back."

As for what sort of games we can expect to see played, Hwang dropped a hint that they could be similar to the now iconic 'Red Light, Green Light'.

"You'll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su," he teased. Young-hee is the name of the animatronic doll who slaughtered contestants during the 'Red Light, Green Light' game.

"Join us once more for a whole new round..." Hwang finished.

While we don't have an exact release date yet, The Guardian reports that Hwang has previously estimated it could arrive in 2023 or 2024.
