After 14 hours of deliberation, jurors announced yesterday that Heard did in fact defame her former husband when she claimed to be a domestic abuse survivor in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed.

The court awarded Depp $15 million in damages in the culmination of the high-profile legal battle which has raged in Fairfax, Virginia, over the last six weeks.

About an hour after the verdict was announced, comedian Schumer appeared to give her own take on the situation via social media.

Schumer took to her Instagram story to share a quote from famous feminist Gloria Steinem, which read: "Any woman who chooses to behave like a full human being should be warned that the armies of the status quo will treat her as something of a dirty joke...she will need her sisterhood."

While Schumer didn't mention either Depp or Heard specifically, many are taking her post to be an expression of support for the Aquaman actor, who was found guilty of all three counts of defamation.

Heard herself reacted to the verdict in a lengthy Instagram post in which she said she was "heartbroken" by the ruling.

"The disappointment I feel today is beyond words," Heard wrote in her statement. "I'm heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband."

She went on to say she is even more disappointed in "what this verdict means for women," calling it a "setback".

"It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke up could be publicly shamed and humiliated," she said. "It sets back the idea that violence against women should be taken seriously."

"I believe Johnny's attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the U.K.," Heard added, referencing Depp's libel case against The Sun newspaper, who he failed to successfully sue for branding him a "wife beater" in 2020.
