The 34-year-old actor took to the Red Carpet at Monday evening's event alongside her husband Ryan Reynolds.

Lively has a history of putting on a show at the Gala, and this year was no different as she rocked up in a magnificent gown that changed color midway up the Metropolitan Museum of Art's iconic stairs.

When Lively first stepped onto the red carpet, her Atelier Versace dress tulle column dress - embroidered with crystals and leather and accessorized with a tiara and opera length gloves - was a rust-brown color.

But onlookers were shocked and awed when - midway up the stairs - Lively undid the oversized bow of her dress to reveal a gorgeous blue train. She completed her outfit's transformation from copper to a greenish-blue shade by stripping off her gloves to unveil a matching turquoise pair underneath.

According to E!, the dramatic color-changing look was designed to pay homage to New York architecture, where copper and bronze structures like the Statue of Liberty have oxidized over time and accumulated a greenish-blue hue.

Meanwhile, the silhouette and metallic touches on the dress reference the Empire State Building, and the foil patterning on the train is a nod to the ceiling of Grand Central station, all in keeping with this year's theme: In America: An Anthology of Fashion, Gilded Glamour.

Lively told reporters that - like the metal structures of the Big Apple - she had "patina'd".

"I patina'd. I arrived in copper, but like New York architecture, I patina'd," she said.

On the red carpet, onlookers gushed at the stunning look while Lively's husband did his best to keep out of the way of her magnificent long train. The actor looked dapper himself in a simple Ralph Lauren tux which, unfortunately, didn't change color as he made his way up the steps.

Reynolds and Lively served as co-chairs at the Gala this year, alongside Regina and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
