The Aquaman star, 36, claims a particular incident of physical assault - that she says was instigated by Depp - left her with a bloody lip.

However, a judge has decided the jury will not be shown the below image, obtained by TMZ, because it was not submitted in time for the explosive $50 million trial.

While on the witness stand earlier this month, Heard claimed that the 58-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star hit her in the mouth during a heated row, saying: "I was in one of these fights, I believe it's this one, in his downtown ECB, we call it, loft, and we're in the kitchen living room area and he backhands me."

She continued: "And, you know, it was, you know, he wears a lot of rings. I remember kind of just feeling like my lip went into my teeth, and it got a little blood on the wall. Just that simple, a little bit of blood on the wall."

Heard claims she took the photo after the incident. It also shows her holding a piece of paper that reads: "I shall return xxx". The Rum Diary actress says Depp had left the note behind after the altercation.

Depp's legal counsel objected to the photo being shown in court, arguing that the actress' own legal team did not submit the picture in the discovery phase of the high-profile case.

The judge ultimately agreed with Depp's lawyers, and the picture was prohibited from being included as evidence in support of Heard's claim that she was a victim of domestic violence by her former husband.

Depp's counsel has since alleged to TMZ that the photo doesn't support the dates specified by Heard in her allegations against the actor.

The outlet says it has confirmed a claim by Depp's lawyers that the photo is from 2012 - however, in the Fantastic Beasts star's libel trial against UK tabloid The Sun, Heard's witness statement alleges that the very first violent outburst happened the following year.

A source close to Heard told TMZ that the actress mixed up the exact dates in the previous libel trial, but her therapist records supposedly show that the alleged violence started around early 2012.
