"I've been asked a lot of questions over the past few days regarding what's been going on at home and sadly, after 22 years of marriage, I have made the decision to file for divorce from my wife, Deidre," Albert shared. Albert Pujols was in the middle of a pre-season game with the St. Louis Cardinals when he received words from his wife's family that she had successfully made it through brain surgery. "Any time you open your scalp and your head, you are always concerned about it," he said to press earlier that day. "You trust the doctor that they have that wisdom and that gift. As much as we take swings in the cage, they do surgery." Albert made it clear he did not intend to leave camp early to go see his wife. He said he'd try to see her during the days off between the end of camp and the start of the season.
"Despite the pain which was to [be] expected the surgery went well. 99% of the tumor was removed," Deidre wrote on Instagram.
"The recovery journey begins ... Thanks you all again for all the prayers and well wishes during this very challenging time." He acknowledged his role on the team in the rest of his divorce announcement.
"I realize this is not the most opportune time with Opening Day approaching and other family events that have recently taken place. These situations are never easy and isn't something that just happened overnight," he continued. "As a devout Christian, this is an outcome that I never wanted to see happen," he noted.
"For many long days and nights, I prayed, asking the Lord for His guidance. I am thankful for the five beautiful children that we brought into this world and remain committed to raising them in a loving and safe environment. I ask that you please respect our privacy and the privacy of our five children during this time." Deidre has not yet commented on the split. Her last update, two days ago, was about her health.
"Whether God healed me supernaturally or a doctor had to go in and get out this creepy invader, it is a miracle! The fact that they can open my head and get out the bad stuff and put it all back together blows my mind," she wrote.
"I am grateful for Dr Louis and the whole Hoag hospital staff who saved my life and cared for me after such a major surgery. I plan to continue to get strong and continue to live my life's mission out fully! Thank you to all who prayed and loved me through this."
