Jena Malone shares how she helped rescue a dog from its abuser: "This was really scary"

Trigger Warning: This story contains graphic details of abuse that may be disturbing to some readers.
Jena Malone jumped into action when she saw a pooch being abused. The Hunger Games actress, 37, shared details of the distressing account on Twitter on Wednesday. Malone was apparently driving through Hollywood, California, on Monday, when she noticed a man repeatedly kicking a small white dog and ruthlessly yanking the animal in the air and choking it.

"This was really scary," she recalled of the incident in a Twitter thread. "I yelled at him to stop from my car but he wouldn't. I got out of my car to try and get the dog but he started running." So, she began chasing the man and signaled others to join her in her pursuit of the man in "an orange vest" as she didn't think she could do it herself.
Malone soon noticed that "there were 5 other men behind me pursuing him" and this "felt like a miracle." She continued, "So at this point, I held back and let them take the lead as I have no business trying to restrain a full-grown man. I went back to get my car( it was still running ) and drove to see if they caught him."

"6 blocks down from where the chase began a big group had gathered and it look like the man no longer had the dog. So I pulled over to make sure that dog was going to be cared for. I didn’t see the brawl but I was told that the man did not give up the dog without a fight and this is the tail end of a heated fight that ensued. The cops came and took the guy. I waited with dog till another cop came to take them to the hospital. The dog was covered in filth and looked like it had been not taken care of for months," she added.

Per a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), "The suspect had a small dog on a leash and was observed kicking the dog several times. In addition to beating the dog, the suspect also held the animal up in the air by the leash...The suspect was eventually surrounded by the group. The suspect then attempted to punch one of the witnesses but missed."

"In self-defense, the witness punched the suspect. Other citizens joined together to physically subdue the suspect who was actively fighting with them. Once the suspect stopped resisting, he was monitored until police arrived and took him into custody," it added, with the LAPD confirming that the suspect now faces felony Animal Cruelty charges reports PEOPLE.

The Donnie Darko star went on to ensure the public that the dog, a six-year-old Maltipoo, has been taken to a hospital and was doing fine. However, she noted that the pooch " has a fractured rib, bone breaks in its hind legs and another fracture in its right paw. It was absolutely horrific seeing an animal treated this way." She concluded her thread by adding, "I’m sorry that it ended in a brawl but the dog was going to die. No question. I can’t imagine the level of torture it had suffered until this point. And now it’s safe in a hospital. Still no word on its owner."

In an update, Malone provided a link to a GoFundMe page that was created for the dog and wrote, "The dog was chipped and back with his owner [Kelly Mckinney whose son stole the pooch and was subsequently stopped by Malone and others before being arrested]. The dog had been missing for a week. His name is champion and is happily out of the hospital and with his owner. Watch out for the go fund link soon. His multiple surgeries will be a lot for the owner to take care of alone."
