Son Transforms His Basement Into a New Home for His Aging Parents

Our parents are our biggest influence through our lives, and be it good or bad, it is certain that our parents are the ones who command who we become in our lives. For those of us who have been blessed to have kind and caring parents, our lives are spent emulating them and making them proud of us. However, after one point every child has to come to the realization that as they are getting older, their parents are too.

As children become adults, there are many ways they care for their elderly parents. In many cultures, it is not just normal but expected that an elderly parent moves in with their eldest child. In the West, it is more likely that elderly parents are moved to a home or facility that can help them better. This is not always the case, though, as some kids go above and beyond for their parents, no matter where they are from.

When Ohio tenant Schol Miller didn't want to move his parents into a nursing home in 2019, he thought of a genius idea that enabled him and his wife to take care of them close to home. He transformed his basement into a comfortable apartment for his parents to live comfortably within a few steps of his own house.

His beautiful gesture had his parents extremely emotional, and it is clear that there is a lot of love between them, Read on to know more about this beautiful story, and what led to Schon getting the idea to build the apartment for his parents.

According to The Daily Mail, George and Bonnie Miller had already spent quite a life together when they entered into their golden years. Both at age 87 however, Bonnie's body began to fail her and unfortunately, George's mind wasn't working like it used to.

George and Bonnie's son, Schon, was very concerned about them. He knew they had such a deep love and needed to be together, but wasn't keen on separating them either.

"We had been talking about it with mum for a while because we knew they were leaning on each other with one good body and one good mind," he told the publication. "One can't live alone without the other and we didn't want either one to end up in a nursing home," he added.

Bonnie had fallen and unfortunately acquired a break in the shoulder that left her unable to do a lot of things she previously used to do. This is when Schon and Jeannie, his wife, began to look for some other options for their living situation.

They had begun a search for a home that would include the in-law suite. Most of the time the in-law suites are small on suites located within the single-family home or they can be a small building in close proximity located on the same property. This makes keeping an eye on older loved ones much easier. The problem was that they couldn't find a home that fit exactly what they were looking for, and it would have only made sense to invest in a home that would accommodate all of them.
Then they had an idea that was helpful for everyone in the situation. "'But when we couldn't find anything, we decided to blow a hole in the basement wall, get rid of our fun stuff like the pool table, instruments, and karaoke area and move them in so we could take care of them," Schon said. This is an incredibly wonderful thing for a son and daughter-in-law to do, and it turned out to be an extremely emotional time for Bonnie and George. The Mirror reported that Schon presented the new suite to his parents as an early Mother's day gift for Bonnie, which was certainly appreciated as seen in the video.

In the video that was uploaded, viewers can see that Bonnie sheds tears as she realizes what her son and his wife did for them. Schon and Bonnie made some sacrifices but they knew that it would be more than worth it to see how happy Schon's parents would be. The basement was completely transformed into a suite that was comfortable and large enough for Schon's parents. Schon and Jeannie even went as far as to supply it completely with everything they could need.

Not every child would go so far for their parents, but Schon has shown himself to be one of a kind.

Stories like this shed light on how important it is to have good relationships with your parents as well as your kids. When parents provide the support and love a child needs, they are much more appreciative of their actions in the future. Though parents may not always believe so, they can learn a lot from their children as well.
