Petition For Truck Driver Given 110 Years In Fatal Crash Has Over 4M Signatures; Truckers Show Support

Organizers are preparing rallies after the holidays to support the fight to grant Rogel Aguilera-Mederos clemency or commutation for his involvement in a deadly crash on I-70 in Colorado.

Investigators have found the crash wasn't the fault of Aguilera-Mederos, who has completely complied with police in the investigation of the matter. No evidence of drugs or alcohol was found in his system, and the factual details of the crash that authorities have determined match Aguilera-Mederos' recollection of events.

Aguilera-Mederos was recently sentenced to 110 years in jail for his involvement in the 2019 crash. A jury found him guilty of vehicular homicide, first-degree assault, attempted first-degree assault, vehicular assault, reckless driving, and careless driving.

Aguilera-Mederos was driving a tractor-trailer on I-70 in April 2019 when his truck lost its brakes as he drove out of the Rocky Mountain region. Aguilera-Mederos could have utilized a runaway truck ramp but failed to and crashed into stopped traffic. There were 28 vehicles involved. Four people died and another six were wounded.

Currently, two rallies are set to take place in Colorado to urge the governor to reconsider this sentence.

"Please note this is in no way to take anything away from the families of those who lost their lives, this is a tragedy all the way around and we offer our respect and condolences," rally organizers emphasized.

"Our goal is to bring local and national awareness so that we CAN find someone who will support Rogel in creating change in this sentencing."

Over 4 million people have signed a petition also trying to create change in this sentence. Aguilera-Mederos, who had no prior record or criminal or driving-related offenses, has apologized to the families of victims and cooperated with various authorities every step of the way. In the meantime, Aguilera-Mederos' legal team is exploring appeal options.
