Five people have been killed and at least 40 injured after an SUV plowed into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, officials have confirmed.

As reported by Sky News, a red vehicle hit dozens of people in the afternoon of Sunday, November 21. Footage of the harrowing incident shows the red SUV speeding through a crowd that included band members and cheerleaders.

According to NBC News, hospitals in the area have treated at least 40 people injured in the parade. At least 15 people were taken to Children's Wisconsin in Milwaukee and 13 were rushed to Aurora Medical Center in Summit. Three of the patients at the latter hospital were in critical condition.

The Waukesha Police Department confirmed the tragic news on its Facebook page, writing: "At this time, we can confirm that 5 people are deceased and over 40 are injured. However, these numbers may change as we collect additional information.

"Many people have self-transported to area hospitals. The Police Department has the person of interest in custody. Main Street is closed from Barstow & Main to Wisconsin and Main.

"The street will not be open before mid-day tomorrow, Monday, November 22nd. Businesses in this area should remain closed as entry and exit from Main Street will not be allowed."

The statement continues: "When the area is open, the City is requesting that any items for a temporary memorial be placed at Veterans Park. Many people witnessed traumatic events this evening. If you need to talk with someone, please call 211.

"The scene is still fluid, and the investigation is ongoing. The community mourns the loss of our community members and those injured. We are asking for the community to come together during this time and to keep the families in your prayers."

According to senior investigators, a person of interest with a potential track record of criminal activity was questioned following the ordeal.

Law enforcement is speculating that the individual driving the SUV had been involved in an earlier incident that involved a knife and was attempting to flee the scene when the car plowed through the parade just after 4:30 PM local time.

An officer shot at the SUV in an attempt to stop it from driving and no one was injured in the shooting, Waukesha Police Chief Daniel Thompson said at a press conference. The vehicle is now in police possession.
