It’s a horrible fact, but it needs to be stated. Each year in the United States, around 3.9 million dogs enter dog shelters. 1.2 million of those dogs are euthanized — it’s terrible. Yet hearing a statistic is one thing, and hearing a story of one of these dogs is another…
You’re about to meet a pit bull named DaVinci. Now, DaVinci isn’t the youngest or healthiest pit bull out there. In fact, rescuers who found DaVinci wandering the streets of Albany, New York, estimate his age to be around 10-12 years old. In bad shape and with neurological issues, workers at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society were worried that DaVinci would never get adopted.
Things took a fateful turn, however, when Chris and Mariesa walked through the humane society’s doors one day. They looked at all the dogs available for adoption, but when they came across DaVinci, they just knew they had to take him home. It didn’t matter that DaVinci was old — Chris and Mariesa were determined to make sure the last years of his life would be with a loving family.
After Chris and Mariesa adopted DaVinci, they renamed him Dave and equipped him with a wheelchair for him to help with his mobility. Dave may have had a rough start to his life, but with Chris and Mariesa, he’ll feel forever loved.
What did you think about Dave’s story? As always, we want to hear your thoughts. Let us know in the comments below!
I wish I could tell you that all stories are like DaVinci’s, but sadly they’re not. Over a million dogs are euthanized every year, but we can all play our part. The next time you’re thinking about getting a dog, adopt instead of buying. You may just save a life!
