Lucy first met her future husband Paul back in medical school at Stanford University. At first, Lucy wasn’t sure how she felt about Paul. The man was wearing a fake mustache in his ID badge picture, and he seemed a bit more on the “nerdy” end of the spectrum. Over time, it was these quirks about Paul that made Lucy fall head over heels for him.
While the couple enjoyed their wonderful lives together, a sudden, tragic event happened to Paul. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer without ever smoking a cigarette in his life. Because of the severity of the illness, doctors determined it was terminal and uncurable.
Lucy tells GMA, “After he got diagnosed, I asked him, ‘What do you need from me? Do you want to travel with your brothers? Do you want me to help you accomplish something that doesn’t include me?’ For him to essentially say, ‘No, I want to be with you… I want to spend my whole life with you,’ was so romantic.”
Then, Paul told Lucy his last request. Curious as to what it was, Lucy listened intently. Paul then asked Lucy to have a baby. With that said, Lucy and Paul had a daughter together before he passed.
Before Paul passed he penned a best-selling memoir titled When Breath Becomes Air. A quote from this memoir is stated below:
“There is perhaps only one thing to say to this infant… that message is simple, you filled a dying man’s days with a sated joy, a joy unknown to me in all my prior years. A joy that does not hunger for more and more, but rests satisfied.”
