Delta Pilot Turns Plane Around After Takeoff Due To Just One Passenger

Once a Delta pilot learned that a family missed the flight and would then miss their father's funeral, he turned around so they could get on the plane.

Rick Short was traveling with his family from Arizona to attend his father's funeral in Tennessee. To get there, they had to catch a connecting flight in Minneapolis, but their original flight was delayed by 90 minutes, giving them only 10 minutes to make their connecting flight, reported Fox 10.

But it wasn't enough time. By the time they got to the gate, the doors were locked and the plane was getting ready to take off. The plane was the last flight to Memphis and the funeral was the following morning.

"The lady got on the phone and said there was nothing they could do, that the tower wasn't going to let them pull back in and my sisters and mom.. sitting there in tears and I'm screaming through the glass,” Rick Short told Fox 10.

Short was banging on the glass, crying and shouting to get the pilot's attention.

“All of a sudden, another phone call," Short said.

The pilot says he saw Short in the window and could see the desperation on his face. That's when he decided to turn the plane around and let the family board the flight.

The family was then able to attend the funeral of Short's father, who had died after a long battle with cancer. But they wouldn't have been able to say good-bye if it wasn't for the act of kindness from the pilot.

"It's very rare.. someone stops and does something so kind and we need more people like that in the world," said Short.
