He Converted a Truck into a Shower-On-Wheels for a Beautiful Cause

Jake Austin is a kindhearted Missouri man who has been volunteering to help the homeless in St. Louis for years. Whether it was food or clothing, Jake was there to help out. At one particular event, he spotted a hygiene table that was in disarray and asked to take it over. He brought in donations of soap and shampoo and toothpaste and other essentials like shaving cream.

But one day, a man politely turned down Jake’s soap donation. He didn’t have a safe place to use the stuff. That’s when an epiphany hit Jake. Showers and hygiene are often a luxury for homeless people, with many of them going months without a shave or a shower. And in a world where appearances matter, a lack of hygiene can stand in the way of homeless people trying to reintegrate themselves with society and the workforce.

That’s why Jake decided to make it easier for the homeless to stay clean. He bought an old truck off of Craigslist for $5,000 and set up a GoFundMe to pay for a clever conversion. With the additional help of volunteers and professionals, he converted this truck into a mobile shower, complete with two shower stalls, sinks, and mirrors.

It powers its amenities with external generators, and fire hydrants for the water. This means his truck – aptly named “Shower to the People” – can travel almost anywhere and provide free warm showers to those in desperate need of them. It is an amazing and low-cost solution to tackle some of the problems of homelessness in the city of St. Louis, and provides some comfort and dignity to those in need.
