Plumber Wins £14m On Lottery, Goes Back To Work Fixing Toilets Two Days Later

Humility is a virtue and 52-year-old plumber John Doherty has it in absolute bucket loads.

Having won the Lottery jackpot and having received a cheque for more than £14million, he's been spotted fixing toilets just two days later because he doesn't want to let his loyal customers down.

The dad-of-two won £14,671,343 on July 2nd to be precise, but kept it quiet as he'd booked a holiday to Florida with his wife, Alison, and his kids.

The winning slip was kept safely under a lantern at home until they returned and got it verified.
But despite his bank account now being swollen with cash, John says he couldn't just give up work altogether.

He said: "I really enjoy my work - I've been doing it a long time. I want to stay grounded.

"I've got a lot of loyal customers and I don't want to let them down. I'm doing stuff that was arranged before all this happened."

John set up his own plumbing and heating engineering business in 1984 and says he couldn't imagine just sitting in the family home all day doing nothing.

"I'm just off up the road to service a boiler I fitted," he said. "My customers are older people and they've treated me just the same after the win which is what I want."

"I will treat myself once it's all settled down a bit. I'll probably slow down a wee bit, too."
John, from Elderslie, Renfrewshire, said he hopes to start working four days a week and only because it's his own business. If it was for anyone else, he'd have packed up by now.

Apparently the only reason the Doherty's got the winning ticket was because Alison allowed someone ahead of her in the queue at her local Nisa. That person then bought a Lucky Dip ticket and so Alison thought she might as well, too.

It was the winning fucking ticket, man.

The family celebrated by getting £45 worth of pizza from Domino's. Not bad.
