87-Year-Old Chinese “Unicorn Woman” Has Large Horn Growing Out Of Her Head

Next time you get into an argument over whether unicorns ever existed or not and your friends try to shame you because you choose to ‘believe‘, give them a knowing smile, pity their ignorance and show them this video. They will never doubt your claims about the existence of unicorns, mermaids and extra terrestrials again. Maybe.

A woman in Sichuan, China went to doctors with a rather stranger and rare condition. She appeared to have a horn protruding from her head like a unicorn. 87-year-old Liang Xiuzhen has a 5-inch by 2-inch growth which amazed locals doctors when they saw it.

It started out as a black mole about seven years ago, but around two years ago developed into a horn shape, which was around two inches long. However the smaller horn somehow broke in February this year and since then has grown rather rapidly into the current one.

Doctors have said its a tumorous growth, a cutaneous horn formed from keratin, which is the same substance our nails and hair are made from. They don’t know exactly how such a growth can happen, but like lots of moles sunlight may have had an effect on it.

The woman said that the horn was stopping her from sleeping and although doctors say they can perform surgery to remove it Xiuzhen’s family have said she’s too old and frail to undergo it.

Because of her rare condition, the old woman named Liang Xiuzhen has been dubbed as the “unicorn woman” by their village.

Around eight years ago, Liang Xiuzhen only had a black mole in the area where the horn is now growing.

According to her son Wang Zhaojun, “My mother complained about this mole-like growth on her head that itched all the time. We found ways to cure her itch using traditional Chinese medicine, and then left it be.”

But after 6 years the mole gave way and a small horn started growing from the skin.

At first, it was just about the size of the tiny finger and around an inch long but Xiuzhen accidentally broke the tiny horn last February and it began growing rapidly over the past six months.

Now it measured about 5.1 inches long. Even medical professionals were baffled by the size and appearance of her unusual growth.

“Now the horn hurts my mother and prevents her from sleeping. It also bleeds from time to time,” Zhaojun added.

Sichuan doctors diagnosed the “thing” as “cornu cutaneum” (cutaneous horn), a keratinous skin tumor that has the appearance of a horn, which can be small and benign or can be much larger and malignant.
Though the physicians can remove the tumor through surgery, Xiuzhen’s age has kept the family from letting the procedure push through.

Zhaojun explained: “My mother is old, and the horn is on her head which is a very sensitive area. I’m not confident [in the idea of] surgery.

“If something goes wrong (during surgery), it would be terrible,” he added.
